J.Roll & DiMag?

One of the biggest stories of the Phillies 2006 season will be Jimmy Rollins assault on Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. Curiously it is a story that seems to be flying underneath the collective radar of the baseball establishment, despite the fact that J.Roll's assault is one of the best in recent memory.

Hypothetically if Jimmy does it and hits safely in his first 21 games this season, does that mean he's broken DiMaggio's record? Or does the record have to be broken within a single season?

I think that if Jimmy does it, hitting in the 57 games would be more impressive than DiMaggio's streak. DiMaggio got into a groove and never got out of it. Jimmy is going to have to pick up where he left off six months ago and get back to it. DiMaggio had tremendous media attention on his feat in 1941, but he had to deal with nothing like the 24/7 media maelstrom players have to deal with now.

Those are my two cents. Stay tuned, A Citizen's Blog officially returns on March 6th.

bring it on back, mikey.

Mike,

Clicked on to see if maybe you reconsidered. Glad to see you did. Welcome back and go Phils!

Brian

According to the ESPN The Magazine piece on J-Roll, if he gets to 57, they'll still list DiMaggio's record as the longest hitting streak to occur within a single season.

Good to have you back, Mike.

Yeah, ESPN The Magazine did a nice little write up on Jimmy's streak as brian noted above. So it's not going completely under the radar. I'm sure it will pick up as opening day nears.

If it was a Yank or one of the Red Sox it would be a bigger story. Keeping it under the radar is good for him. But he deserves the hype.

I think it may be even harder to have a streak that spans two seasons. It seems like all the momentum will be gone after a six month break...

Anyone know the longest hitting streak to start a season? I would think that it isn't much more than 21. That's a feat in and of itself. To go on a tear likle that right out of spring training would be great. Good for Jimmy. He's come along way from nearly being written off a couple years ago.

There are two distinct streaks, just like any other record...a single-season and a career one. Rollins would have the career one, DiMaggio woudl keep the single-season record, but most people other than Yankees fans would just say that Rollins was the new king.

or tose that were missing the comment... the 50's yankee media does not even come close to the world media of today... if he continues the presure will be much worse... he is not going to go under the radar if he continues to hit... there is no under the radar when you attack a baseball, or for that matter sports, all-time great records
